Former Kane County Board member Monica Silva recently was sworn in as Kane County Coroner after her election Nov. 5, according to a news release.

As coroner, Silva will oversee death investigations and prioritize prevention, innovation and public service, according to the release.

“I am honored to take on this role and serve the people of Kane County,” Silva said during her swearing-in ceremony. “My goal is to uphold the standards of this office and provide families with care and answers during difficult times.”

She pledged a commitment to transparency and collaboration and to work closely with law enforcement, health care providers and community organizations, according to the release.

Silva aims to modernize office operations and enhance the community’s understanding of the coroner’s role through educational outreach initiatives, according to the release.

“My relationships with board members and my willingness to collaborate with elected officials enable informed decision-making and effective policy implementation,” Silva said in the release.

Silva plans to use her role as coroner to focus on prevention.

Drawing on her clinical experience, Silva will emphasize evidence-based outcomes to address factors such as Adverse Childhood Experiences, which significantly impact mental health.

This approach supports early intervention and strategic resource allocation to organizations best equipped to assist, according to the release.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Adverse Childhood Experiences are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood from birth up to age 17. Examples include experiencing violence, abuse or neglect and witnessing violence in the home or community.

“The coroner’s office must also actively engage with the public by attending community events and supporting high-risk populations,” Silva said in the release.
