As dangerously cold wind chills are expected to dip below zero this weekend, Batavia will open a Temporary Warming Center to assist vulnerable residents at the Batavia Police Department, located at 100 N. Island Ave.
The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory from 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, through noon Wednesday, Jan. 22. Wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
While the center will be open for the week, the city is unable to provide sleeping accommodations, dedicated hygiene or washing facilities or refrigerators for food storage.
Visitors should check in at the front desk of the Batavia Police Department.
Residents who have at-risk friends, neighbors or relatives should help by checking on them periodically, according to the release.
The city urges caution while traveling outdoors and advises wearing appropriate clothing, including hats and gloves.
