What’s Happening in Batavia

Salt Smart Exhibit

Excessive road salt damages vehicles, harms pets and plants and degrades rivers and wetlands.

When visiting Batavia City Hall, be sure to check out the Salt Smart exhibit.

This temporary display offers information on de-icing salt, its environmental impact and proper use for winter surfaces. Don’t forget to grab a free salt cup.

The exhibit is provided by The Conservation Foundation’s Salt Smart Collective.

Batavia’s winter street maintenance

The Batavia Public Works Street Division ensures safe and accessible streets and facilities during winter. Crews manage snow and ice removal for 117 miles of streets, 168 cul-de-sacs, two cemeteries, 14 parking lots and downtown sidewalks.

Primary streets are treated first with de-icing salt, followed by secondary streets and cul-de-sacs after snowstorms end. Plowing operations often occur early mornings to maintain accessibility. While the city manages most streets, Kane County handles roads such as Randall and Kirk. Winter safety is a community effort. Learn more at bataviail.gov/snowremoval.

Avoid frozen pipes

As temperatures drop, the risk of frozen pipes rises. The Batavia Water Department recommends these tips to protect your home or business from costly water damage:

  • Insulate pipes: Use insulation or heat tape, especially in unheated areas.
  • Drip faucets: Let faucets along exterior walls drip during extreme cold to prevent pressure buildup.
  • Open cabinets: Leave cabinet doors under sinks open to allow warm air circulation.
  • Seal cracks: Use foam or caulk to block cold air entering through exterior cracks.
  • Close crawl spaces: Cover vents and seal access points to reduce freezing air exposure.

Stay proactive during freezing weather. Learn more at bataviail.gov.
