Geneva Public Works crews are working on a water main break today, Feb. 3, at 537 E. State St., the third water main break within the last 24 hours, officials announced in a news release.

East State Street/Illinois Route 38 is down to one lane in each direction from Harrison to Woodlawn streets and westbound lanes are closed. Traffic will be pushed over to what is normally the interior eastbound lane.

Eastbound drivers will be limited to the outside curb lane from Nebraska to Harrison streets to accommodate the temporary westbound traffic.

Motorists may want to consider alternate routes and should use caution when traveling through the work zone, according to the release.

The water main break occurred late Sunday, Feb. 2 with crews able to isolate the problem, which is currently being repaired. The roadway is anticipated to be fully reopened before the evening rush hour.

Public Works crews already repaired a break shortly after midnight Feb. 3 at Chalmers and Kansas streets.

A third water main break occurred at 8:15 a.m. Feb. 3 at West State Street and Maple Lane, according to the release.

This break is currently under control but will need to be fully repaired either later Monday or more likely on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Lane closures will be announced before work gets underway, according to the release.

Most of the recent water main breaks stem from large temperature swings, which have caused the ground to shift and damage the underground infrastructure.

The city believes all customers in the water main break areas still have active water service.

Customers with questions can call the Geneva Public Works Water Division at 630-232-1551.

Water main breaks occurring after-hours, weekends or holidays can be reported to Geneva police non-emergency number at 630-232-4736. Police will then dispatch the on-call Public Works personnel to respond.
