Sean Scheck, Marmion junior.

Name: Sean Scheck

School: Marmion

Why he was selected: Scheck won the 220-pound championship at the Class 3A Naperville Central Regional. Marmion qualified all 14 wrestlers for sectionals. Marmion had 10 champions and four second-place finishes. Scheck was voted Athlete of the Week by readers. Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson caught up with Scheck to discuss the accomplishment, his season and more. The Athlete of the Week is presented by Don McCue Chevrolet in St. Charles.

Bartelson: Emerging from the mat victorious, what was that feeling like for you, considering the work you put in to this point?

Scheck: It was just a great feeling seeing the work pay off in action. We always try to wrestle through tournaments and do our best as a team. But to see what we all put in the wrestling room out on that mat, it’s an amazing feeling. I can’t even describe it.

Bartelson: Considering the team success, what does it say about the quality of the wrestling room that you have in order to prepare and see the results you do?

Scheck: As a team, our coaches will push us to our limits in practice, enough to where we might be in tears or where our bodies just want to give up. It’s just that level of intensity and that training that just pushes us to compete at this level.

Bartelson: Is there something unique about your wrestling season individually that I just wouldn’t know? Sometimes there are guys who have to take time off to nurse their way through injury.

Scheck: Definitely. I did not get to wrestle my sophomore season at all because my last football game against Joliet Catholic, I fractured my [right] hip.

Bartelson: So you didn’t get to wrestle last year, and with the shortened COVID season and more, how much did missing your sophomore year of wrestling fuel you to get to the season you’re having?

Scheck: I think just knowing the fact I got that far behind, going to every practice and seeing my teammates get better each day, it kind of just motivated me to get back up to their level. I didn’t want to let my team down.
