Four Batavia, Marmion and St. Charles East wrestlers all won their first matches at the IHSA state tournament in Champaign on Thursday, with Kaneland’s Cameron Phillips also advancing in the championship bracket at State Farm Center.
Batavia’s Aidan Huck (113) defeated Morton’s Anthony Lopez in a 7-3 decision, Kaden Fetterolf (138) defeated Barrington’s Phil Chapa in an 11-0 major decision, Cael Andrews (145) defeated West Aurora’s Noah Quintana in a 7-3 decision and Jackson Tonkovich (182) defeated Pekin’s Shamon Handegan in a 7-2 decision.. Batavia’s Ino Garcia (106) fell to Fremd’s Wiley Jessup in a 4-2 decision.
Marmion’s Jameson Garcia (113) defeated DeKalb’s Rory Burright in an 8-7 decision, Collin Carrigan (152) defeated Harlem’s Marshal Cunz in a 12-2 major decision, Tyler Perry (170) won by fall over Hampshire’s Dimitri Skoulikaris and Jack Lesher (182) defeated Loyola Academy’s Quinn Herbert in a 8-1 decision. Marmion’s Donny Pigoni (106) fell in a 9-1 major decision to Bradley-Bourbonnais’ Ethan Spacht, Santino Scolaro (138) was defeated by Moline’s Kole Brower by fall, Tegan Chumbley (145) was defeated by DeKalb’s Tommy Curran by fall and Kenny Siwicki (160) was defeated by Plainfield North’s Jared Gumila in a 13-5 major decision. Teddy Perry (195) was defeated by Stevenson’s Jacob Whiting in a 8-4 decision and Sean Scheck (220) was defeated by New Trier’s Ty Stringer by fall.
St. Charles East’s Ben Davino (120) defeated Mt. Carmel’s Jairo Acuna in a technical fall, Tyler Guerra (132) won by major decision over Alton’s DeOntae Forest 12-1, Brody Murray (160) defeated Arlington Height’s Billy Spassov in a 6-4 decision and Austin Barrett (285) won by an ultimate tie-breaker over Plainfield North’s Kaden McCombs 3-2. Saints’ teammates Gavin Connolly (145) fell in a 4-2 decision to Marist’s Ricky Ericksen and Elijah Chiaro (170) was defeated by Lockport’s Brayden Thompson by fall.
In Class 2A, Phillips (106) of Kaneland defeated Thorton’s Keeven Osborne in a 13-5 major decision. Burlington Central’s Nathan Kim (170) was defeated by Civic Memorial’s in an 8-1 decision in the quarterfinals.
