Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week: St. Charles East's Brooklyn Schilb, freshman, girls basketball

St. Charles East's Brooklyn Schilb

Name: Brooklyn Schilb

School: St. Charles East, freshman

Sport: Girls basketball

Why she was selected: In a game against Wheaton North, Schilb put up seven of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to help the Saints to a come-from-behind 46-43 victory.

Schilb was selected the Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week in an online vote.

Here is her Q&A with sports reporter Joel Boenitz.

Boenitz: You had a team-high 17 points in the game against Wheaton North. How did you feel you performed in that game?

Schilb: I feel like I performed well. I took the opportunities that I had. When I was running transition, I ran it. And when I could slash to get open or make the correct path to someone diving, I was able to do that.

Boenitz: What was your mindset heading into that fourth quarter with your team down by only two points?

Schilb: During halftime, we talked about how we needed to stay calm and keep our composure and go back to doing what we wanted to do, so I knew that I had to keep calm. It’s easy to get nervous, but I knew I had to keep calm, have trust in my teammates and just play the game.

Boenitz: You also had the key assist to Sofia O’Sullivan on the eventual go-ahead basket. What was that feeling like?

Schilb: It felt really nice. I know that there’s other ways to impact the game other than scoring and I think that showed that you don’t have to necessarily score the basket to make an impact. Just being able to keep your eyes up and looking for an extra person is a way that you can easily just impact the game.

Boenitz: The win kicked off a 3-0 week for the Saints and moved you to 7-2 on the season. What’s it like seeing this success early in the season?

Schilb: It has been really nice. At the beginning of the year, we set our goals knowing that we wanted to go far this year. And I think just giving the opportunities to play hard teams like Waubonsie Valley and play these other teams had been nice to show people the skills that we have and what we can do.

Boenitz: You’re averaging 15.6 points a game so far in your first high school season. What’s the transition to high school basketball been like for you?

Schilb: I’ve been really blessed with the opportunity of having great teammates to help me out. It’s really nice when you have great upperclassmen, especially like (senior) Corinne (Reed), who’s going on to play college basketball and who knows the game. So just having her and these other people to give their advice in house and what to do in these situations has been great.

Boenitz: One of those teammates happens to be your sister, junior Addie Schilb. What’s it been like playing with her?

Schilb: It’s been really nice. Growing up, we were always playing against each other in competitions like that. But now it’s nice to be able to be on a team together and having somebody that you can always talk to and that’ll always be there for you.
