In an effort to achieve the mission of sharing music with local kids, Malik’s Music provided a teen girl in foster car with a new bass guitar, amp and accessories.
Malik’s Music partnered with the Community Santa Project to help a child. A teen girl in foster care received the bass and she was overjoyed with the Christmas gift.
“I’m never going to forget this and someday I’m going to give a kid something they really want,” the recipient said in a letter. “This has helped me so much. It takes up my head space and helps with my depression because I’m doing something fun. "
“This is exactly why we started Malik’s Music,” stated Max Chiet, one of the group’s founders, in a news release.
Malik’s Music is a nonprofit organization which grants scholarships of instruments and lessons to low-income youths and teens who can’t afford them. St. Charles brothers Zac, Max and Cam Chiet want to make sure that all young people have the chance to pursue their musical endeavors.
The mission of the group is to spread the joy of music by providing resources for music lessons and instruments to low-income youths and teens in Kane, DuPage, Kendall, DeKalb, and McHenry counties. The three brothers formed Malik’s Music after one of their good friends, Malik, drowned in 2018. He was 14.
“Our monetary and instrument donations allowed us to purchase these items for a child. Additionally, Sweetwater musical instrument store provided a discount, allowing Malik’s Music to make these purchases,” Malik’s Music president Kate Chiet said in the release. “They can keep them unless they stop playing and would like to donate them back, this is their choice.”
Malik’s Music donates both used and purchased instruments to the community as well as grants for music lessons from local music teachers. Funding comes from a combination of online donations and events such as concert fundraisers. To date, Malik’s Music has been able to provide instruments and educational materials to over 105 youth musicians.
Last summer, Malik’s Music partnered with the St. Charles Business Alliance to present concerts as fundraisers. These concerts served not only as fundraisers for Malik’s Music, but also provided a space for local youth musicians to play and showcase their talents to the community.
“We were able to get out into the community to tell people about Malik’s Music, raise money, and provide venues for local teen artists to perform,” said co-founder Zac Chiet.
Malik’s Music has partnered with Kane County CASA and Mutual Ground to identify children who may benefit from this foundation.
“We honor Malik with this foundation. We hope to help as many children as possible as music helps with depression and anxiety, " said co-founder Cam Chiet.
