BATAVIA – Two people died in a rollover crash Monday afternoon in Batavia that involved six vehicles, according to a news release from police.
The crash occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Kirk Road, with one vehicle flipped on its roof with its two occupants deceased. Police are withholding their identification until next-of-kin are notified, the release stated.
In addition to the deceased, two occupants of another passenger car, a woman and young child, were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
None of the other occupants of other vehicles required medical attention as a result of the crash, the release stated.
Vehicles involved were a tractor semi-trailer, an tractor pulling a fuel tank and four passenger cars, the release stated.
No hazardous materials leaked from the fuel truck and no HAZMAT response was required, the release stated.
Preliminary investigation indicates that while attempting a lane change, one of the passenger cars struck the semi-trailer, causing the passenger car to cross over into oncoming traffic, ultimately coming to rest on its roof, the release stated.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation and no citations have been issued.
The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation of this case, which remains open.
The roadway remained closed as of 4:45 p.m. and motorists are urged to find alternate routes, the release stated.
No additional information is available at this time pending completion of the investigation.
