UPDATE: Woman in stable condition, teen in custody following St. Charles shooting Wednesday morning

A 24-year-old woman is in stable condition at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva with two apparent gunshot wounds after being shot Wednesday morning inside an apartment in the 1700 block of Covington Court.

A 17-year-old boy is in police custody. At 6:55 a.m., St. Charles police officers were dispatched to the apartment following a report that a woman had been shot inside an apartment, according to a news release from the St. Charles Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers found a 24-year-old female with two apparent gunshot wounds. Officers also learned that a possible offender had left the apartment just prior to their arrival.

St. Charles Police, with assistance from the Geneva Police Department and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, immediately set up a perimeter of the surrounding area, according to the release. Within 30 minutes, the suspect was located and taken in to police custody without incident.

Police believe that the incident was isolated to one apartment and that all parties involved were familiar with one another, adding that there is no reason to believe that the general public is any danger. Police continue to investigate the incident.

Out of caution, several St. Charles schools were put on lockdown earlier this morning while police were actively investigating. The lockdown was lifted at 7:45 a.m., according to an email from District 303.

“Earlier this morning there was an incident at Covington Court where the police were involved. The district, in collaboration with the St. Charles Police Department, locked down Davis, Richmond, Thompson and the Haines Center for a short time. Although this incident occurred prior to arrival, students and staff members who were in the building before school were moved to safe locations. Several bus routes were delayed due to the police activity,” the district’s email stated.
