SUGAR GROVE – A restaurant chain known for its funky American-Mexican cuisine and surf and skater atmosphere is cruising its way into Sugar Grove.
Bubbakoo’s Burritos, a chain based on the Jersey Shore that started franchising in 2016, will be opening in a currently undeveloped lot in the Sugar Grove Center Planned Unit Development (PUD). It will be free standing just north of the existing in-line building that’s home to L.A. Tan, Rosati’s Pizza and Subway among others.
The village of Sugar Grove Board approved the final PUD for Lot 17 Sugar Grove Center during its Oct. 5 meeting.
Hemant Patel of Sugar Grove Real Estate, LLC purchased the lot which is being developed into a 12,000 sq. ft. multiple tenant building that will feature five additional tenant spaces in addition to Bubbakoo’s Burritos.
“Thank you for bringing this in front of us and buying that lot and finishing up the shopping center,” Village President Jen Konen said. “It’s exciting to this board to see some growth in town.”
While all of the tenants haven’t been named, one will be a Cold Stone Creamery and another will be Subway as the current Subway that’s located in the existing building will relocate. A high-end bar may also fill one of the spots.
In addition to ice cream, Cold Stone Creamery makes ice cream cakes for any occasion while its vast offerings also include ice cream cookie sandwiches, pies, yogurt, sorbet, shakes and smoothies, according to its website.
Currently the closest Cold Stone Creamery to Sugar Grove is in Naperville.
The Bubbakoo’s concept is similar to Chipotle as diners pick a burrito, bowl, tacos, taco salad, quesadilla, nachos or the chiwawa as their entrée as well as proteins like chicken, ground beef, steak, shrimp, carnitas, vegetarians and vegan and over a dozen toppings. In addition to the entrees, Bubbakoo’s menu runs deep, with southwest egg rolls, chicken tenders, boneless wings, jalapeno poppers, curly fries, tots and more.
Bubbakoo’s will be located at the end space on the north of the new building and will feature an outdoor patio area, offering outdoor dining. An additional patio area with outdoor seating is planned for the space between the new building and existing building to the south but the occupant has yet to be revealed. It may be ideally suited for a bar since it would benefit from the outdoor area.
In other news, Walter Magdziarz, community development director for the village of Sugar Grove, shared that Prairie Point, 58 W. Park Ave., is open for business. The senior care facility offers assisted living and memory care.
