After hosting the Plano Police Department’s eighth annual Shop with a Cop event, Chief Norman Allison knows there is a reciprocity of joy spread when one acts out of generosity.
“It’s about humanizing the badge,” Allison said. “Some of these kids will never forget that interaction they had with our officers. It’s a great time and we have an awesome experience as well, you feel on top of the world because you are able to provide these kids that positive experience.”
Each year, around 10 students are identified by their school as kids that would be perfect to benefit from the unique experience. Each child is provided $100 and shops with a cop-of-their-own around the Plano Walmart.
“When the officer walks around with the student, they exchange great dialogue and have a great time,” Allison said. “Sometimes, there’s that moral conversation where the kid wonders if they should buy something for themselves or for others. We help teach that the holidays are the time to give to others and to always help those in need.”
Allison said two local families received $500 gift cards.
The police department receives grants and donor funds from families throughout the city for the event.
Allison said participating in the event each year has been one of the special things he’s had the chance to experience during his 24 years with the Plano Police Department.
“We are able to form that special bond with the students,” he said. “It connects us not only with the children in the district but with the entire community itself. I love our town. I grew up here. Whenever there’s an instance where a family or a child is in need, our people always come to the forefront and ask what they can do to help.”
