Yorkville Public Library Adult Services Department events for January 2024:
New Programs:
Meditation and Mindful Movement: At 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 7, 14, 21 and 28, join Cristen Grajeda from Balanced Bluebird Healing for this simple and gentle session to relax, release tension and support self-healing.
Scrapbooking: At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, join the library for a monthly scrapbooking group with JoAnne Nudelman, a scrapbooker for the last 25 years and a Creative Memories Advisor. In the class, attendees will work with the Simple Page Kit from Creative Memories. It’s a great kit for beginners, but an experienced scrapbooker would love it as a quick way to keep their albums current when life gets busy. Each month is a new design to create a beautiful two-page layout.
Magic: The Gathering Club: At 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 15, 22 and 29, Magic: The Gathering Club will take place at the library. It is a tabletop card game with over 50 million players worldwide. Attendees will play Commander format games of Magic the Gathering with like-minded friends and gamers. This group is open to experienced players or those brand new to the game. Attendees should bring their own deck to participate in the games. The program is open to adults and high school students ages 14 and up.
Special Events:
Staying Safe from Online Scams: At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, an informative talk about online safety and ways to identify potential scams will take place at the library. Attendees will work together to understand: How to remove stigma and fear? What to do when they get scammed? How do online scams work? What are they after? Three places where scamming most frequently happens?
The Past, Present, and Future of Chicago Pizza with Steve Dolinsky: At 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, the library will host a special Zoom event with Food Guy reporter at NBC 5 and James Beard Award winner Stever Dolinsky. In this presentation, Dolinsky will dish on The Ultimate Chicago Pizza Guide: A History of Squares and Slices in the Windy City - his comprehensive guide to the styles, locales and people that make Chicago the prime destination for ‘pizzaholics’ everywhere.
Your Friend in Health: At 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, the library will host a health and wellness series with certified health coach Arinne Dickson. This month’s topic is Healthy Eating Made Easy: Do you wish there were a simple way to make better nutrition choices? In this interactive class, participants will learn not just what to eat, but why to sort out bad foods from what is truly nourishing. By the end, attendees will feel more confident about what to choose at the grocery store and have a next step to focus on. No fancy diets required.
Our Hidden Gem: The Fox River: At 7 p.m. Jan. 22, The Conservation Foundation will present a series of programs on the Fox River. Attendees will join local experts as they talk about different aspects of the river, from fun and leisure times to geology, ecology and wildlife.
Recurring Groups:
YPL Puzzle Swap: Individuals can stop by the library to swap their gently used puzzles with some of the library’s.
English Language Learners Classes: On Monday through Thursday as well as Saturday, the library will host free, conversation-based classes to help people new to the community learn English.
Chair Yoga: At 10:15 a.m. Thursdays, Jan. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, the library will host Chair Yoga to benefit adults of all ages. The event will be held in the library’s Michelle Pfister Meeting Room. Space is limited and registration is required.
Dungeons and Dragons Group: At 4 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, local gaming enthusiasts will coach new gamers to create camaraderie and a sense of community through tabletop gaming. Meetings are every Thursday evening and open to people ages 18 and older.
Roaming Readers Walking Club: At 9 a.m. Fridays, Jan. 3 and 17, individuals can meet at Hoover Forest Preserve in Yorkville to walk and talk about books. The forest preserve is located at 11285 W. Fox Road. Registration is required and the event may be canceled due to weather.
Threads and More: At 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Threads and More group will hold their monthly meeting. This informal group allows participants to work on crocheting, knitting, sewing etc. projects and converse with other “threaders.” The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Adults 18 and older are allowed, and no registration is required.
Books and Cooks Book Club: At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, Yorkville Public Library will host a book club dedicated to reading and sharing new recipes and/or treats inspired by the monthly reading.
Lunch Bunch Book Club: At noon Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Lunch Bunch Book Club will take place in the library’s boardroom. Attendees can bring their lunches and join the “Lunch Bunchers” for a lively discussion about great books. Meetings are at noon on the second Wednesday of every month.
Dabblers: Adult Painting Class for Beginners: At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, attendees can come to the library to learn to paint with Carolyn Kyle. In this new series, attendees will learn the basics of painting - each month focusing on different techniques, mediums or styles.
Psychological Thriller Book Club: At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, Yorkville Public Library will host its book club on psychological thrillers, mysteries and suspenseful stories. The club will meet on the third Wednesday of each month to discuss a different book.
Tech Help for Seniors: At 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, local tech expert Steve Goodwin will be at the library to assist seniors with technology issues. Goodwin will help patrons one at a time for sessions of 15 minutes each. He will help patrons on a first come, first served basis, and attendees should be courteous of patrons that may be waiting behind them. If patrons have problems that take a longer time to resolve, Goodwin offers his professional services outside of the library.
Men’s Book Club: At 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, the Men’s Book Club will meet to discuss its monthly book. The Men’s Book Club meets on the third Thursday of each month. No registration is required, and newcomers are welcome.
Healthy Cooking with Jess: Retirement Well-th: At 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, certified holistic health coach Jess Stewart will demonstrate how easy and simple healthy cooking can be. Yorkville Public Library’s monthly series on nutrition and wellness teaches participants how to care for themselves after retirement and beyond.
Monday Movie Madness: At 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, attendees can enjoy a free afternoon movie with friends on the last Monday of each month. To see a complete list of upcoming movie selections, check out the library website’s social programming page.
Horror Book Club: At 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, fans of horror stories can attend the Horror Book Club. The club will meet on the fourth Monday of each month to discuss a new spooky book.
Adult Creative Writing Group: At 7 p.m. Jan. 28, writers can come together to discuss upcoming projects or to learn more about writing. This group is for all people who are passionate about words. Its intent is to create a positive, encouraging, honest and fun atmosphere that will support and motivate each person to achieve excellence in writing. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
