On the road again: Yorkville completes $3M Local Road Program

Work on Faxom Road marks completion of city’s first major program since Great Recession

After delaying expensive road construction following the Great Recession, Yorkville has completed its $3 million 2024 Local Road Program with the finishing touches applied to Faxon Road.

Eric Dhuse, Yorkville’s director of public works, said residents of the town can be proud of the work that was invested in improving the area’s roadways and infrastructure.

“The work will actually save us money in the long run,” Dhuse said. “We’ve deferred maintenance for so long since the recession, and now we’re finally able to catch up. If we were to keep deferring improvements in these larger subdivisions, it would just get more expensive to replace because the problems would be exacerbated by time.”

Overall, the city paid $3,162,000 to Builders Paving, LLC to complete this year’s extensive road work.

The work along Faxon Road, which stretches from High Ridge Lane to Twinleaf Trail, cost $566,685 of the total amount.

The section of Faxon Road that was completed had sat unfinished since 2006.

Dhuse said all that needs to be finished is a few minor items like sodding and general cleanup of the area when spring rolls around.

According to city documents, the 2024 Local Road Program was completed in two large construction phases.

Phase I of the construction involved pavement rejuvenation in which workers repaired small cracks in the existing roads with a sealant and applied a special treatment to the existing asphalt to improve flexibility.

This process helps improve the durability of the city’s roads, saving the town money over time.

Phase I was completed by workers in early May of last year.

Phase II involved milling and overlay work for the project. Milling is when workers remove the top layer of existing pavement to overlay the roads with a new layer of fresh, smooth asphalt.
