Yesteryear: Looking back at stories that captured headlines in the Record for February

2000: Bristol-Kendall Firemen were among those called to St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Oswego in late January. The fire caused about $1 million damage and a report released in February 1980 said the cause was combustible items inadvertently left too close to a space heater.

February 2020

The Kendall County Forest Preserve Commission approved a contract to demolish the historic Millbrook Bridge. Officials said the piers holding up the bridge were rapidly deteriorating.

February 2015

A blizzard dumped about a foot or more of snow on Kendall County.

February 2010

A study by the University of Wisconsin finds that Kendall County residents are among the healthiest in the state. They were ranked No. 2 behind DuPage County.

February 2005

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced plans to realign the intersection of Route 71 and Route 126, so that the routes cross at closer to a 90 degree angle.

February 2000

Menards has purchased about 130 acres on the east side of Route 47 near Kennedy Road and hope to break ground this spring for a new store, according to Mayor Art Prochaska.

February 1995

Yorkville City Council agreed to buy the old Kendall County Courthouse after the new courthouse is built. Groundbreaking for the new building is set for April.

February 1990

Golf Course Boom? The Yorkville Plan Commission approved a petition for a golf course at Route 47 and Legion Road. The Kendall County Zoning Board of Appeals also approved a plan for a combination golf course and subdivision near Bristol, Blackberry Oaks.

February 1985

Kendall County will not be the site of a new General Motors Saturn plant. Every County in the state was invited to submit a proposal and 179 sites were submitted. Kendall County’s plan was rejected because it was not close enough to an interstate highway. (The plant was eventually built in Spring Hill, Tenn.)

February 1980

Chicago Cub Randy Hundley was the guest speaker at the Yorkville Lions Club Community Night.

February 1975

Yorkville Postmaster Harry Crawford announced that the plan for door-to-door city delivery of mail has been approved and will go into effect next month. In the past, the only delivery to homes was on the two rural routes. Other customers picked up their mail at post office boxes.

February 1970

The Kendall County Board was told it must reapportion the county into districts, or have a plan forced on then. Board members are currently elected one for each of the nine county townships.

February 1965

Four persons were killed in a four-car collision on Route 34 near Tuma Road and the Country Charm Restaurant.

February 1960

Pro Bowler Stan Gifford put on an exhibition at the grand opening of the new alleys at Plano Recreation.

February 1955

Limited traffic is now permitted on River Road. The road was washed out at the bridge last fall in the flood.

February 1950

The Village Board hired Franklin Martyn as chief of police. He had been acting chief and also served as police chief here prior to the war.

February 1945

Memorial services were held in Plattville for two brothers, killed in action in France a few months apart. Burton K. Fox was injured July 11, 1944 and was returned home to a hospital in Chicago where he died Feb. 14, 1945. His brother Warren L. Fox, was killed Aug. 9, 1944. Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Fox of Aurora, formerly of Plattville.

February 1940

State Highway Patrolman Eugene Roberts, 45, of Villa Park was killed in an accident near the state weighing station on Route 34 east of Yorkville. He was hit by a car driven by a Chicago man as the patrolman was alighting from a truck. The driver was freed of any blame following an inquiry by a coroner’s jury.

February 1935

A Chicago and Southern Airways plane was forced down about five miles west of Yorkville, due to mechanical problems. The pilot and one passenger were unhurt. They commandeered the automobile of Albert Thurow and with Albert driving, took the mail on board to Aurora to be forwarded to Chicago.

February 1930

Yorkville High School is now at 135 students.

February 1925

Springfield’s Dr. George T. Palmer held a clinic at the courthouse. Anyone feeling in run down condition will be wise to have an exam. The county nurse later reported 25 examinations were given.

February 1920

The Rasmussen Motor Company of Yorkville and Newark presented a day-long demonstration on farming with tractor power. Much instruction was given and farmers were loud in their praises of the new methods demonstrated.

February 1915

The public spirited men of the north side are planning the installation of a water works system for fire protection and the use of the people. An estimate of the cost is about $10,000.

February 1905

We hear we are to have an electric road from Morris to Yorkville this summer. Seeing is believing.

February 1900

It is reported that the Yorkville street railway will be pushed to completion with the opening of spring and that it will go through Oswego and on down the east side of the river.

February 1895

Jake Darfler took his team down on the ice above the dam and scraped the snow off so as to make a nice skating pond. it is reported sleighing on the Fox River is fine all the way to Montgomery.

February 1890

Will Healy has been appointed fish warden for Kendall County by Governor Fifer.

February 1885

Lisbon School did not open two days this week due to not enough scholars reporting for a quorum.

February 1880

We are promised several railroad improvements this year. Among them a new depot in Plano and a double track from Bristol westward will be built.

February 1875

Snow filled the cuts on the Fox Railroad line this week, making it almost impossible to get through. The morning passenger, due in Yorkville at 7:17 was stuck in a drift below Ottawa and did not get here until 2:30 p.m.

February 1865

Kendall County is dumbfounded at the quota of soldiers being requested for the war effort. Total of 224 more! Where will they come fro?
