Two occupants of a burning Montgomery townhome who found themselves trapped on the second floor of the residence early Monday, Jan. 31, managed to escape the fire through a window assisted by Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputies.

In a statement, the fire district reported they were summoned to the blaze at 12:45 a.m. in the 200 block of Williamsburg Court in the village’s Seasons Ridge subdivision.

Firefighters were notified as they responded to the blaze that two occupants were trapped on the townhome’s second floor.

Firefighters from the fire district’s Station No. 2 on nearby Weisbrook Drive in Oswego arrived at the residence within five minutes of the initial dispatch and found both occupants had escaped the blaze through a second floor window.

The sheriff’s office reported in a separate statement that before the arrival of firefighters, Montgomery police officers had attempted to make entry at the front of the townhome but were unable to due to smoke and flames.

Sheriff’s Deputies Tyler Giannotti and Jacquelyn Mielke heard calls for help from the rear of the residence and rushed towards them.

The deputies located two people calling out from the second-floor window and were able to aid them by catching them as they jumped to safety from the burning structure.

Deputy Giannotti broke the fall of the first occupant and was able to call to the second occupant to then jump to safety.

Deputy Samuel Markusic, who had also rushed to the scene, helped ensure the two occupants were safely away from the burning townhome and helped them to fire and rescue personnel for treatment.

The deputies were later treated and released as a result of their exposure to the fire and smoke.

The two occupants of the residence were transported to an area hospital.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious in nature, the fire district said.

The initial estimate of damage to the townhome and its contents as a result of the blaze has been placed at $250,000.

During the fire, the Plainfield, Aurora Township and Sugar Grove Fire Protection District assisted the Oswego Fire District by providing local station coverage. The Plainfield Fire Protection District also provided a battalion chief to the scene to assist with operations.
