The National Weather Service has placed Kendall County along with most of northern Illinois under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the NWS, a tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of severe storms that may create tornadoes.

In a statement, the NWS said, “Showers and storms are expanding in coverage this afternoon. There have been indications of mini-supercell structures embedded in the showers at times which could result in funnel clouds or even brief tornadoes...These have the potential to become severe with all severe hazards possible, including strong winds, tornadoes, and large hail.”

The NWS is forecasting two rounds of showers and thunderstorms, with the first round ending at 4 p.m. The second round of thunderstorms is expected to arrive later this afternoon after 4 p.m. and continue until 8 p.m.
