Yorkville Community Unit School District 115 is set for major upkeep of the Yorkville High School roof, with school board officials previewing options during a committee meeting Monday, March 8.
The project will restore about 40,000 square feet of the school’s roof this summer. Built in 1996, the roof is reaching the end of its life expectancy, leaving school board members to decide between a costly total tear-off or a renovation. Costs for the cheaper renovation option will reach at least $487,000, and involves recoating the entire roof and fixing areas where water has seeped in.
“We’re paying about $10 to $12 per square foot,” said Heather DiVerde, the district’s director of facility operations. “If it were to be a full tear-off it would be $20 to $22 per square foot. So it would double our costs if we were to do that.”
DiVerde said the renovation will extend the roof’s life by 20 years and already is budgeted for in the district’s finances. Garland Company, a commercial roofing firm, has been awarded the contract for the project.
The school board will vote on final approval of the project at a later date.
