Name: Kendall Grant
School: Oswego, junior
Sport: Basketball
Why she was selected: Grant scored a career-high 27 points in a win over East Aurora and had 21 points, five rebounds and five assists against Oswego East.
She was selected the Athlete of the Week in an online vote. Here is her interview with Sports Editor Joshua Welge.
What did it mean to accomplish that career high in points?
Grant: It felt good. It was a good reminder that the time I’ve spent training and improving is paying off, and it gives me confidence to keep pushing both personally and as part of the team because I know we can do more.
Your team has shown consistent improvement the last couple of years. What do you feel is the difference from this year to last and the one before that?
Grant: The difference is almost completely confidence. Our team is full of dedicated girls. The mindset is we can win every game we go into. We’ve battled in every game we’ve played so far, win or lose.
What parts of your game have you worked on?
Grant: Defense and rebounding has been a major focus point for me. I’ve also put a lot of time into my outside shooting so that I can be a bigger offensive threat.
I know you golf too. Any other sports you have played?
Grant: Golf occupies the majority of my time outside of basketball, but I think playing two vastly different sports is definitely a key factor in my success.
Outside of sports...do you have a favorite TV show or movie?
Grant: My favorite movie is definitely “Hustle” with Adam Sandler. The movie shows the passion and mindset it takes to succeed and it’s a good underdog story.
Do you have a favorite musician?
Grant: My favorite musician is Drake. Me and my teammates like to listen to him and he always gets us hyped pregame.
What’s your favorite class in school?
Grant: My favorite in school is history. I like learning about the past and how things have changed and why they are how they are.
