Mundelein man charged in shooting death of Wheeling man

Police say he was in vehicle, hid gun used in Mundelein crime

MUNDELEIN – A Mundelein man has been charged in connection with his role in the death of a Wheeling man.

About 7:10 p.m. Dec. 9, Mundelein police officers responded to a report of shots fired in a parking lot located in the 700 block of South Lake Street, according to a news release.

Officers learned that Luis Moreno, 21, of Wheeling, had been shot and taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in a privately owned vehicle. Despite efforts to save him, Moreno was pronounced dead, police said.

Whoever took Moreno to the hospital left before officers arrived, according to the release.

During the investigation, Lake County Major Crime Task Force investigators and Mundelein Police detectives located the vehicle used in the homicide and determined that Joaquin Romero, 20, of the 900 block of Lake Street, Mundelein, was present in the vehicle when Moreno was shot, according to the news release.

Investigators also say Romero possessed the firearm allegedly used in the homicide and hid it. He was arrested without incident in Round Lake.

Romero has been charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm and obstructing justice.
