Morris’ Layken Callahan named Morris Herald-News Athlete of the Week

Morris' Layken Callahan

Morris girls basketball player Layken Callahan won the voting this week for Morris Herald-News Athlete of the Week. She beat out Seneca wrestler Raiden Terry and Seneca boys basketball player Paxton Giertz.

The Morris Herald-News chatted with Callahan, a sophomore who scored 61 points in three wins to help her earn the honor.

MHN: When did you start playing basketball?

Callahan: I was probably around 3 or 4 years old. My dad [Brennan] was coaching at Sandwich and I would tag along to practices and games. My whole family has played basketball and been good at it, so it just came naturally to me.

MHN: What is you like best about basketball?

Callahan: I really enjoy going to new places and meeting new people. I have met a lot of people that I probably wouldn’t have met if I wasn’t playing basketball, so that’s something I really enjoy.

MHN: Your sister, Landrie, is a year older and on the team with you. Do you play much against each other?

Callahan: We play 1-on-1 all the time. Pretty much every day in the summer. We are both very competitive and there is always a big argument or two. We push each other to get better. Once we are playing on the same team, though, everything is cool and we don’t argue.

MHN: How is the season going and what are your goals for the rest of it?

Callahan: We are playing pretty well. We are starting to play some more competitive teams and that is only going to make us better. One of our main goals this year is to win a regional title.

MHN: What is your favorite pregame meal?

Callahan: I will have a protein bar and eat whatever my mom cooked before I leave the house for a game. Then, in the locker room before the game, I usually will have an energy drink.

MHN: What’s on your pregame playlist?

Callahan: I listen to my sister’s playlist. I think she has good taste in music. There is a lot of rap on the playlist.

MHN: What is your favorite subject in school?

Callahan: I like biology.
