After scoring 88 points and hauling in 51 rebounds in four games at the Ottawa Holiday Tournament, Morris girls basketball player Landrie Callahan won the voting for Morris Herald-News Athlete of the Week. Callahan beat out Minooka boys basketball player Jaden Boe and Minooka girls wrestler Holli Coughlen.
MHN: When did you start playing basketball?
Callahan: My dad [Brennan] used to coach basketball at Sandwich. Some of the first memories I have are of being at basketball practice with him. But I think I was around four years old when I first started playing.
MHN: What do you like best about basketball?
Callahan: I tried other sports like softball, volleyball, soccer and golf, but I always leaned toward basketball. Both of my parents played in college, so it is the favorite sport in our house. I was pretty good at all the sports, but it was in basketball that I really stood out the most.
MHN: Do you prefer to play down on the block or out on a wing?
Callahan: In school ball, I play more down low because I am the tallest player we have. In travel ball, almost everyone is my height, so I play the three - a shooting guard or small forward. It feels nice to get out on the floor where there’s more open space.
MHN: What is on your pregame playlist?
Callahan: I like to listen to a lot of rap. There’s people like Kanye, 21 Savage, Boss Man. It gets me pumped. My sister (and Morris teammate) Layken likes to listen to my playlist, too. Sometimes the songs will skip and stuff because we are listening to the same playlist. But, we always have the same vibe going on the court.
MHN: What is your favorite meal?
Callahan: I like a Chipotle bowl, with pretty much anything in it. Chicken, guacamole. They are crazy expensive, though.
MHN: What is your favorite subject in school?
Callahan: I like history classes. I like learning about the past and what happened, and I like the civics classes to learn how government works.
MHN: What are your goals for the rest of the season?
Callahan: We want to win the conference. To do that, we will have to beat Sycamore, who just beat Ottawa, and Kaneland, who we lost to the other night. I think we can do it. We also want to win a regional.
