Former Grundy County Board Chair Balkema sworn in as 53rd District Senator

Illinois 53rd District Senator Chris Balkema, R-Channahon, is sworn in on Thursday.

Former Grundy County Board Chairman Chris Balkema has been sworn in as the new Illinois 53rd District Senator.

Balkema, a Republican from Channahon, said in a news release Thursday that he’s honored to represent the 53rd district and humbled by the trust placed in him to serve the community.

“As I step into this role, I want to congratulate (former) Senator Tom Bennett on his remarkable ten years of service,” Balkema said in the news release. “His dedication to our district and to the people of Illinois has left a lasting legacy, and I wish him the best in the next chapter of his life.”

Balkema was first elected to the Grundy County Board in 2010 and served as Chairman starting in 2016. He has also worked for Caterpillar for 31 years.

“I am eager to begin this important work for the people of the 53rd District,” Balkema said. “I’m excited to represent our communities, understand their needs, and work together with leaders across the state to drive positive change for Illinois.”
