The Grundy Area Vocational Center Agriculture students, led by Ev Gonzalez and Grace Emmerich, have been filling in as instructors for Ag in the Classroom while the regular instructor is on maternity leave according to a Wednesday news release.

Gonzalez and Emmerich planned the lessons, and the GAVC Agriculture students have taken what they’ve learned to the next generation of agriculture students.

In the firs two weeks, students have been to Minooka, Morris, Coal City and Gardner schools.

"Growing up, I never knew I would ever want to work with kids," said Minooka junior Ava Perkins. “But today getting to see the smiles on the kids, who were just having fun learning about something they probably would never imagine learning was amazing to see. I loved teaching them something I never thought I would have a fun time learning. They all just brought a smile to my face while talking about all the stuff they knew about soil as 4th graders. I truly had a great time teaching and telling them my story about Agriculture and why I decided to do it, as well as what I plan on doing in my future. I hope they all consider the true meaning behind Agriculture.”

Through teaching, GAVC Agriculture students have been able to show their communication and public speaking skills, and get younger students excited about agriculture. The students teach about soils through the rest of January before teaching about pigs in February, with the goal of furthering the agricultural education of fourth grade students in Grundy County.
