GSW’s Steichen joins teammate Bexson as 1,000-point scorer

MORRIS – After winning the Interstate 8 Conference and the Medium School title at the Washington Sectional, the Morris varsity cheerleading team placed fifth in the state competition in the Medium Division.

The Redskins finished with a score of 95.24 in the finals, trailing only Oak Forest (97.53), Lemont (96.87), Vernon Hills (96.44), Highland (95.97) and Lake Villa Lakes (95.24).

Morris team members included seniors Frances Cummings, Taylor Ericson, Emily Estensen, Mackenzie Gerischer and Grace Scott; juniors Lilian Ochoa, Adriana Plascencia, Bailey Snyder and Ava Trotter; sophomores Mariya Anderson, Maria Hulbert, Peyton Murphy, Haylee Nicolaides, Ava Ostrem and Amber Tessone; and freshman Ally Fisher.

Boys Basketball

Cissna Park 64, Gardner-South Wilmington 55: Connor Steichen scored 23 points to lead GSW, which finished 9-9. Among the 23 was Steichen’s 1,000th career points, as he joined teammate Chris Bexson, who scored his 1,000th earlier in the season, in the 1,000-point club.

“Congratulations to both Connor and Chris,” GSW coach Allan Wills said. “They both have been on the varsity [team] since they were freshmen, and they will be missed.”

Boys Soccer

Minooka 5, Yorkville 1: Ben Joder scored twice for Minooka, while Michael Reuttiger, Logan Kalafut and Braden Hall each had a goal. Manny Campuzano, Ethan Kirbarovsky, Justin Pech and Zac Monnett each had an assist for the Indians, while Kimbarovsky made two saves in goal.

Girls Basketball

Plano 51, Morris 37: Mackenzie Lind led Morris with 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in the season finale. Moriah Mayberry added eight points, while Alexis Johnson scored six.
