COAL CITY – On Monday, April 26, at 1:33 p.m., Coal City Police responded to 55 E. Elm St. in Coal City for a report of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a female victim, Sheri Tucker, 50, claiming to be the ex-girlfriend of the resident James Hammen.

The female victim advised officers she was at this residence to retrieve a cellphone. The female victim advised that she made contact with Hammen, who took another phone she had in her hand and threw it at her. The female victim also advised that Hammen struck her on the left side of the face with his right hand, causing observable redness and scraping.

Coal City Police made contact with Hammen, who was inside the residence, and asked him to come outside to speak with them about the incident. Hammen refused to come outside and shouted obscenities at law enforcement and the female victim. Hammen continued to show aggressive behavior, throwing numerous household items from the windows.

Hammen then threw out a sword and an axe toward law enforcement. Hammen made verbal threats to law enforcement on scene. Coal City Police backed away for safety, continuing to provide a perimeter around the residence.

Hammen then was observed throwing a door knob at the victim’s vehicle, causing damage to the vehicle, prior to having the vehicle moved from the scene. Lines of communication remained open with Hammen, although Hammen refused to cooperate.

Coal City Police called Will County SWAT to the scene. Local agencies also assisted to include the Grundy County ProAct Team, Grundy County Sheriff’s Department and Coal City Auxiliary Police.

Will County SWAT Team arrived on scene and responded to the north side of the residence. During that time, Hammen peacefully exited the south side of his residence and was taken into custody by Law Enforcement.

Hammen was transported to Grundy County Jail and charged with domestic battery, unlawful violation of an order of protection, criminal damage to property, obstructing a peace officer and aggravated assault.
