Morris Theatre Guild announces auditions for summer show

Tryouts for ‘Yankee Tavern’ will take place June 6

MORRIS – Morris Theatre Guild has announced auditions for its summer show, “Yankee Tavern” by Steven Dietz. Auditions will be held at Morris Theatre Guild, located at 516 W. Illinois Ave. in Morris, on Sunday, June 6 from 5-7:30 p.m.

The story revolves around a crazy-sounding 9/11 conspiracy theory. A stranger walks into the Yankee Tavern. There, inside the walls of a crumbling New York tavern, a young couple finds themselves caught up in what might be the biggest conspiracy of all. Steven Dietz’s acclaimed and already widely produced dramatic thriller is a fierce, funny and ultimately mind-bending work of theatrical power that grips audience members until the final word. Unlike the popular saying, this play hints that what you don’t know can hurt you.

The four characters in this show include Adam, a graduate student in his mid-to-late 20s; Janet, Adam’s fiancée, in her early-to-late 20s; Ray, a 50- to 60-year-old friend of Adam’s deceased father and a resident of the tavern; and Palmer, a 40- to 50-year-old person. The director will consider all ages for the roles to be filled but will be looking for the appropriate demographic balance in casting to retain integrity and believability.

Show dates are 7:30 p.m. July 30-31 and 2:30 p.m. Aug. 1. Tickets already are available for $15 online at morristheatreguild.org. Note that this show will only be presented for one weekend rather than the two weekends offered during the regular season. Masks and limited seating will no longer be needed. Those wishing to see live theater are encouraged to get tickets for this interesting and challenging show.
