A motion to detain four men accused of stealing nearly $5,000 worth of merchandise from the Oak Brook Sunglass Hut store was approved on Tuesday, prosecutors said.
Jaidera Rincon-Jaramillo, 24, with no known address; Jonamer Barrios-Moreno, 28, and David Vivas-Esis, 21, both of the 4800 block of W. Homer Street, Chicago; and Gregory Mendoza-Rivas, 25, with no known address; appeared at First Appearance Court Tuesday each charged with one count of burglary, one count of robbery and one count of retail theft. Additionally, Ricon-Jaramillo and Barrios-Moreno are both charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding, according to a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release.
About 2:37 p.m. Jan. 20, Oak Brook police received information about suspicious activity involving a silver Ford Fusion parked in the Oak Brook Mall parking lot. Officers located the Ford and began surveillance. As officers surveilled the Ford, they alerted employees at Sunglass Hut about three individuals, later identified as Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno and Vivas-Esis and an unknown individual entering their store, according to the release.
Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno, Vivas-Esis and the unknown accomplice allegedly entered the Sunglasses Hut, selected 13 pairs of sunglasses worth about $4,960, and attempted to flee the store without paying for the merchandise, authorities said.
After a brief struggle during which the defendants pulled an employee to the ground, the four men fled the store with Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno and Vivas-Esis returning to the Ford and the unknown accomplice fleeing into the mall, according to the release.
Mendoza-Rivas, Barrios-Moreno and Vivas-Esis allegedly entered the Ford. Officers activated their emergency lights and siren at which time the Ford, allegedly occupied by Rincon-Jaramillo, who was waiting in the vehicle, fled, according to the release.
Ricon-Jaramillo reached speeds of approximately 93 mph on Butterfield Road and ultimately made his way to eastbound Interstate 290. The Ford continued to flee from officers on I-290 and ultimately exited the expressway at southbound Manheim Road after police successfully deployed spike strips. The Ford turned westbound onto Harrison Street and pulled over. All four defendants were arrested at this time, authorities said.
“It is alleged that these defendants helped themselves to nearly $5,000 dollars’ worth of merchandise from the Sunglass Hut, got into a physical altercation with the store clerk, pulling her to the ground, and simply walked out the door without paying,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “To make matters worse, it is alleged that the driver of their getaway vehicle, Jaidera Rincon-Jaramillo, then led police on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds of approximately 93 mph, during a crowded holiday afternoon. This type of behavior that puts the general public as well as innocent motorists at risk will not be tolerated in DuPage County.”
The next court date for each defendant is scheduled for Feb. 18 for arraignment.
