ELMHURST – Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Superintendent David Moyer is leaving the district to take a superintendent position in upstate New York.
District 205 school board President Kara Caforio informed the district community in an email Thursday evening.
Moyer, superintendent of schools in Elmhurst for the last six years, was approved as superintendent of Arlington Central School District in LaGrangeville, N.Y. at a Thursday school board meeting, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported Thursday evening. The district in New York, about 80 miles north of New York City, serves approximately 8,500 students.
“The Board of Education was recently made aware of his intentions to serve elsewhere,” Caforio said in the email to the district community. “We will be working closely with Dr. Moyer and the D205 administrative team in order to ensure a smooth transition as he completes the school year here in D205 before beginning his new role on July 1, 2021.
“We are grateful for the dedication Dr. Moyer has exhibited these last six years to implement a vision of continuous growth and improvement for all of our students and staff. His educational vision will be missed.”
Caforio said in the letter that the board will immediately begin the search for the district’s next superintendent. After securing the assistance of a search firm, the selection process, opportunities for engagement and the projected timeline will be shared. An update will be provided at the next school board meeting, scheduled for Jan. 26, if not before.
“We are committed to a smooth transition and regular communication throughout this process with our community as we put in place a new leader to begin the next chapter of D205,” Caforio said in the letter.
Prior to taking the District 205 Superintendent position in July of 2015, Moyer served as superintendent of Moline-Coal Valley School District No. 40 for three years, according to his Linkedin page. He was superintendent of Burlington Area School District for two years, assistant superintendent of Community Consolidated School District 117 for four years and principal of McHenry East High School for three years.
“I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude for all of your efforts these past six years to transform District 205 into A National Leader in Future Ready Learning,” Moyer said in a statement released Friday morning. “I am so proud of all of you. During this time, we have accomplished many things together.”
Moyer told the Poughkeepsie Journal he was drawn to New York when he heard his son was moving to the region. He said he plans for Arlington to be his last job before retirement. His youngest child, a daughter, is a sophomore at Elmhurst University.
“When this job became open I thought it was a great opportunity and I decided to pursue it,” Moyer told the Journal. “And, there are some similarities to my current district, so I thought there was potential that it would be a good fit.”
