The current pandemic has created a need for size-restricted gatherings, and this has perhaps taken the greatest toll on families who have lost a loved one. Traditionally, viewings and memorial services are hosted so that family and friends can pay their respects to the deceased and to the surviving family. These days, creativity is required in order to host a proper funeral service that pays homage to your loved one. Here are 3 ideas for creative funeral services during these uncertain times:
1. Display items that tell the story of the life of the deceased. “Every funeral should be as unique and special as the individual you’ve lost,” explained John Adolf, Director of Adolf Funeral Services. ‘Average’ isn’t a word you should use to describe someone’s funeral service. The details deserve great attention, as expressing and sharing them with others have a wonderful way of helping people heal. I’ve seen motorcycles, professional racing bicycles, fishing gear, snow skis, bowling balls, golf clubs, and many other unique items be displayed by the casket to reflect how the deceased enjoyed his or her life.”
2. Consider live-streaming the event. Funeral services can be streamed on Facebook Live or on YouTube. It doesn’t require more than a smartphone or a tablet set up on a tripod. This allows friends and family from far away to participate in the service, which is important since travel may not currently be completely safe due to the pandemic. Viewers can extend condolences online. A link to the service can be provided in the deceased’s online obituary.
3. Host a drive-through visitation. While you’ll have to get permission from your funeral home’s director, a drive-through visitation allows friends and family to pass through the parking lot to greet immediate family members and express condolences without leaving their vehicles.
