While holidays can be fun for people, they can feel stressful for pets. If you are planning to bring your furry friends with you to a holiday gathering this year, here are some tips for keeping them safe and happy:
1. Prioritize your pet’s comfort
Before embarking on the journey, consider whether your pet(s) might feel more at ease in the familiar surroundings of their own home with a trusted pet sitter. If you decide to bring pets along and they experience anxiety or car sickness during travel, consult your veterinarian about appropriate calming or anti-nausea medications.
2. Don’t let pets roam in vehicles
Always prioritize your pet’s safety during travel. For dogs, a sturdy crate securely fastened to the vehicle with a seat belt or other anchoring system is the safest option. Cats often find car travel stressful. A carrier can provide a secure and comforting space, reducing anxiety and preventing escapes. Additionally, to minimize distractions for the driver and potential airbag injuries, it is best to keep pets in the backseat during the journey.
3. Give pets plenty of breaks
Remember to schedule frequent rest stops on your trip so pets can stretch their legs, take potty breaks, and get some fresh air. Before each stop, however, make sure your pet is securely leashed to a collar or harness. Don’t forget to attach an ID tag with up-to-date contact information. For added protection, consider microchipping your pet before your trip. Having a recent photo of your furry friend on hand can also be helpful in case he or she goes missing.
With a little preparation and consideration, you can ensure your furry friends enjoy the holidays as much as you do.
