Construction on Broadway Street boat launch in Marseilles progresses

Work remains on pier, parking lot

Marseilles City Engineer Mike Etscheid told the Marseilles City Council that Pohar and Sons is making making progress on the Broadway Street Boat Launch.

The Council approved the first payment of $298,083.81 to Pohar and Sons for the construction during that meeting. The quoted total when the project passed through the City Council was $553,049.80.

“Just a reminder that this was paid for out of a TIF district, before anyone comes up with a rant about the use of tax dollars,” said Mayor Jim Hollenbeck.

A TIF district is an economic development tool aimed to clear up blighted areas that allows local governments to dedicate new sales and property tax revenues generated by a redevelopment project to pay for improvements within the district.

The TIF District that made this project possible has now expired.

Etscheid said Wednesday there’s some work remaining on the pier and the parking lot still needs finished. Other than that, there’s some concrete work that needs done but the project should finish on time.

The hope when it was approved is that the boat launch would be finished by October.
