St. Bede has placed girls basketball coach Tom McGunnigal on leave for reasons the school declined to disclose.
McGunnigal, a 1988 graduate of the school, also has been placed on leave from his duties as admissions director.
“Information has been brought to the attention of the administration that warrants a thorough investigation,” assistant principal and athletic director Nick McLaughlin said. “We are not at liberty to comment further at this time. We are committed to maintaining a positive, healthy and supportive learning environment for all students.”
Assistant coach Dana Jauch will coach the varsity girls basketball team in McGunnigal’s absence.
McGunnigal, who was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2019, has led the Bruins to a 434-242 record, eight regional championships and one sectional title since taking over in 1998-99.
St. Bede opens the season Monday against Geneseo in the Geneseo Thanksgiving Tournament.
