Spring Valley semi fire extinguished (updated)

Chief: fire limited to rear tire and axel

Spring Valley firefighters spray down a semi carrying soybeans Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, in the 200 block of West Dakota Street. Fire Chief Todd Bogatitus said the load caught fire and was extinguished, but the load still was hot and in danger of re-igniting.
Spring Valley firefighters douse the rear axel of a semi carrying soybeans Monday morning in the 200 block of West Dakota Street. The axel fire likely was caused by a brake or tire failure.

A tire or brake failure is the likely source of a semi fire that slowed traffic Monday morning on U.S. 6 in Spring Spring Valley.

Spring Valley Fire Chief Todd Bogatitus said a semi carrying soybeans caught fire, though the quickly-extinguished fire was limited to a rear axel and might have been the result of a blowout. Bogatitus said firefighters were on scene about half an hour in the 200 block of West Dakota Street and cleared the scene around 10 a.m.
