The approval of permits for two La Salle events were put on hold until the City Council can decide if the special permits will allow for the events to produce increased decibels.
One permit was for increased noise at the Hegeler Carus Mansion’s Friday concerts over the summer, and the other was for increased noise and extended hours for outdoor music Saturday, May 21, at the Gateway of La Salle, 328 Third St.
Alderman Diz Demes said Monday it is unclear if the special permits allow for the increased decibels, according to the city’s ordinance, and he didn’t want residents or businesses to question the city.
The City Council plans on discussing the matter at its Monday, March 21, meeting to define what it will allow in regard to noise.
In October, the City Council had discussions about the noise ordinance after Demes raised issues with Nick’s on 6. Aldermen, however, maintained the status quo with its ordinance, believing special permits would give the council the ability to weigh in on each event ala carte.
Alderman Joe Jeppson said he is frustrated the topic is being rehashed after it was discussed extensively in the fall. He said organizers were under the assumption they could fill out a form for an exemption and it’s doing a disservice to them to stall, because they need to plan events months in advance.
Jeppson and Alderman Tom Ptak both voted against tabling approval of the Gateway to La Salle event organized by Gary Hammers, of Nick’s on 6.
