For the first time, a black squirrel visited a feeding station in Beverly Ruppert’s yard in Peru. The squirrels are most frequently sighted in communities such as Mendota and LaMoille; they have significantly smaller populations in surrounding communities. Eastern gray squirrels can have a genetic mutation that makes their fur black or white, according to the University of Illinois Extension.
