A low-head dam in the Vermilion River near Oglesby — which has been the site of recreational accidents, including one recent death — is expected to be removed by the end of the month, weather permitting.
Phoenix Corp. of the Quad Cities started construction on the dam removal Nov. 29 and construction continues at the site.
The top few feet of the dam were removed with the bucket of a trackhoe. This portion of the dam was constructed of stone with a cement coating. An underwater hammer will be used to remove the remaining portion of the dam.
Phoenix Corp. is in the process of removing the lower portion of the dam and concrete blocks on the downstream side of the dam.
This project will allow the Vermilion River to be a more natural free-flowing river. Dam removal also will eliminate the dangers that are a threat to paddlers and fishing enthusiasts using the river for recreation.
Final site restoration is expected to be finished in the spring of 2022. The final construction cost will be known after the work is completed.
