Spring Valley is one of seven cities in the United States with a population less than 10,000 to receive the National Night Out Cup in recognition of the department’s coordination of activities for this summer’s National Night Out event.
Police Chief Adam Curran also thanked the citizens and businesses that supported the police department’s Holiday Extravaganza at John F. Kennedy School and reported the department purchased Christmas gifts for 12 children through its Shop with a Cop program.
Additionally Monday, a corporate tax levy that figures to raise $1.8 million to support city coffers was approved by the Spring Valley City Council at its final regular meeting of 2021.
The additional revenue comprises roughly 12% of the city’s total budget of just less than $15 million for the current fiscal year. The largest allocations of the funds are to the police pension ($435,000) and liability insurance ($210,000) budget lines.
Also approved Monday was an ordinance providing for the abatement of all of the levy and extension of taxes for 2021 previously established to pay for a pair of $425,000 obligation bonds the city issued in 2010.
The council also approved a pair of monetary donations to the Voluntary Action Center’s Meals on Wheels program and the Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living.
The council’s next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 3.
