The students from Morris Community High School’s Interact Club have donated 57 shoeboxes full of toys that will be sent to children in developing countries as part of Operation Christmas Child.
The Morris Community High School Board recognized the organization Monday night, and Interact Club President Brady Babington explained how the project came to be.
Babington said Interact is a nationally recognized club focusing on developing leadership skills by believing in the power of service of self. It operates under the umbrella of Roteract Clubs.
“A lot of our service projects are giving back to the community, and that’s what we did with our project Operation Christmas Child,” Babington said. “We packaged 57 shoeboxes that we donated to Olivia (Peterson)‘s church. We may not be the most well-known club at our high school, but we really do give back to the community and I’m proud to be the president.”
Peterson said she was introduced to Operation Christmas Child through a project done at her church, where volunteers worked to donate shoe boxes full of toys.
All of the boxes packed through Interact were sent to Faith Baptist Church, which will send over 600 boxes to an organization out of Aurora that will ship out the boxes.
Babington, Peterson, Riley Tedford, Madeline Hamer and Donovan Smith were all at the meeting representing Interact Club. Christi Benson is the club’s faculty advisor.
