Registered Nurse Alex Corwin, a Morris resident, has been named Morris Hospital’s Fire Starter of the Month for December.
Corwin’s known working in healthcare was her calling from a young age, and her childhood dream was becoming a pediatrician to care for sick children, inspired by the compassionate care she received as a child.
“Her passion for helping others has been the driving force throughout her career, including her eight-and-a-half years at Morris Hospital, where she has gained a reputation for being a team player who is always willing to lend a helping hand,” reads a Friday news release.
Corwin also shows communication and leadership skills on top of the compassion and care she shows for every patient.
“Alex brings positive energy and a big smile every time she works,” said Tony Bucky, Morris Hospital’s Director of Emergency Services. “She is an incredibly hard worker who is always calm and cool-headed, a skill you need to work in the Emergency Department. Her ability to lead those around her is a huge asset for our department.”
Corwin’s journey into healthcare was shaped by health challenges she faced as a child that required frequent hospital visits. These experiences cemented her desire to pursue a career in healthcare.
“When I was younger, I experienced firsthand the impact that doctors and nurses can have on their patients,” Corwin said. “From those moments, I knew I wanted to work in healthcare and help people feel safe and cared for. That passion has been the foundation of my career.”
Corwin was nominated by Haley Garifo, a patient care technician in the emergency department. She said Corwin is an inspiration.
“Alex is a positive influence not only on her coworkers but most importantly, on her patients,” Garifo said. “She inspires everyone to show kindness because you never know what someone is going through.”
Corwin said interacting with patients is the most rewarding part of the job.
“When I interact with a patient, I want them to know they are not alone and that I am truly listening to them,” Corwin said. “I know from my own experiences as a patient and as a loved one to someone sick that being heard and feeling involved in the care decisions makes a world of difference. At the end of the day, our job is to help patients achieve the best outcomes possible, and I take that responsibility to heart.”
In early civilizations, fire starters were people who had the job of keeping the flame alive.
