A Holiday Hills man was denied pretrial release after authorities charged him with possessing cocaine with intent to sell it and running from police during a traffic stop.
Matthew K. Hoff, 31, was charged with possession and possession with intent to deliver 15 to 100 grams of cocaine, the latter a Class X felony, and two counts of resisting a police officer, according to the criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court.
Hoff was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by police Monday afternoon, at which point he got out of the car and started running away, Assistant McHenry County State’s Attorney Anthony Marin said. Police caught Hoff and found about 20 grams of cocaine on him, authorities said.
The prosecutor said authorities believe Hoff has been dealing drugs in McHenry County and had just made a sale, or a “drop,” before police pulled over the car he was riding in, Marin said.
Lake County also has an open case charging Hoff with a Class 4 felony of drug possession, according to court records. In McHenry County, Hoff was charged earlier this year with aggravated battery for allegedly hitting another defendant in the McHenry County Jail, from which he was released on pretrial conditions, according to court documents.
For the latest charges, Judge Carl Metz II denied Hoff pretrial release because he was already out on release from the Lake County case and “still broke the law.”
Marin had requested that Hoff be denied pretrial release becahse he’s a “threat to the entire community.” Marin said home detention would not be effective because “the addicts [Hoff] created will seek him out.” Assistant Public Defender David Giesinger said there are no allegations that Hoff sold drugs from his home.
