One person was taken to the hospital after a head-on crash Thursday night near Cary.

Officials attributed the crash and a second one near Harvard to the snow that fell Thursday night into Friday.

“While these incidents happened in different areas and involved separate fire districts, both highlight the hazardous conditions caused by the winter weather,” said Alex Vucha, public information officer for both the Cary and Harvard fire protection districts.

Vucha said the Cary fire district was called out about 8:30 p.m. Thursday near the Route 14 and Nimco Drive intersection.

When fire crews arrived, they found two vehicles with moderate damage, Vucha said. A man driving one of the vehicles suffered minor injuries and was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital outside Barrington. Two adults and two children were in the other car; they were evaluated at the scene but were not injured.

Westbound Route 14 was closed for about 45 minutes while crews cleared the scene.

An hour earlier, up Route 14 on the other side of the county near Harvard, the Harvard fire district was sent to the 18700 block of Route 14 for a single-vehicle rollover crash. Fire crews found the rolled-over vehicle, and Vucha said the snow-covered, slick pavement was likely a factor.

A woman who was alone in the car had freed herself from the car before fire crews arrived. Paramedics evaluated her, but she did not need to be taken to the hospital.
