For those looking for last-minute holiday gifts made right here in McHenry County, Etsy stores and brick-and-mortar shops have you covered.

At Artisans on Main, at 220 Main Street in Woodstock, several artists with space in the store have handmade holiday goodies for purchase.

Deanne Ferguson, who attended Woodstock High School, has ornaments for sale this year at the store, also home to the Clayworkers Guild of Illinois. Some of the ornaments depict farm animals; others commemorate her hometown and its most celebrated day of the year – Feb. 2, Groundhog Day.

Janell Mayer also has handmade ornaments for sale at the store, with designs including penguins, dogs, chickens and roosters. Though the ornaments are her primary items, she also has some holiday-themed “uggles.” Mayer described them as small creatures, but the holiday ones have Christmas patterns in the clay.

Mayer’s artwork has been popular at the store. She said she sold 200 cicadas earlier this year when cicada-mania swept McHenry County.

Trish Vollkemmer has been making pottery since 1981. She has mugs for sale – a “go-to for everybody,” she said – and also little ceramic decorations, magnets and flower vases. The vases have a snowy winter scene, Vollkemmer said.

The magnets have designs including Christmas trees and cows, the latter of which have been popular.

“People like the cows, I don’t know why,” Vollkemmer said.

For those who want a small reminder of the holiday spirit on their desk or counter, Susan Clough makes small, hand-thrown Christmas trees for sale at the store. The ceramic trees come in white and green and are about 4 to 6 inches tall.

Holiday shopping procrastinators have until Christmas Eve to check out the unique gifts available at Artisans on Main.

It’s not just brick-and-mortar stores with the perfect holiday gift. Local artists and artisans also offer their homemade work on the online market Etsy, and in some cases procrastinators can still get items under the tree before next Wednesday.

Debra Barton, who runs a jewelry store, JewelrybyDB, on Etsy, offers Hanukkah and Christmas earring sets. The Hanukkah set comes with eight different pairs, while the Christmas has 12. The selection varies, Barton said. People can order by Sunday for Monday pickup, Barton said. Her shop can be found on Etsy here: etsy.com/shop/JewelrybyDB.

Crystal Lake Soap Co. also still has plenty of options available for people who maybe want gift sets or other soap items. Some of the more holiday-themed items include Frosted Fir Tree scented candles and a mistletoe-themed “kiss kit.”

Kristi Steponaitis of Crystal Lake Soap Co. said the company is offering local pickup through 7 p.m. Monday. For details, people can contact Steponaitis at Kristi@CrystalLakeSoap.com or visit the store’s website at crystallakesoap.com.
