Update: Wonder Lake man killed in head-on crash last week identified

The man killed in a head-on crash near Wonder Lake Friday was a 49-year-old Wonder Lake resident, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Joseph M. Depner, 49, of Wonder Lake Monday afternoon. The coroner’s office said in a news release they performed am autopsy Monday and preliminary results found Depner died of blunt force injuries. Toxicology is pending and the coroner’s office said it was working with the sheriff’s office and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District.

The other driver involved in the crash, a 65-year-old Naples, Florida man, was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital and is listed in stable condition, police said in a news release.

The sheriff’s office said it was called about 12:35 p.m. Friday to the scene of the crash in the 7300 block of Barnard Mill Road. The preliminary investigation found a Mazda 6 driven by the Wonder Lake man was heading southeast on Barnard Mill Road when it crossed the center line and hit a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by the Florida man while it was traveling northwest.

The Mazda exited the road and came to rest in a wooded area, while the pickup truck remained in the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office.

There was air bag deployment in each vehicle, and the drivers were wearing seat belts. The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said the Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
