A man was taken to the hospital Friday evening and evaluated for hypothermia after falling through the ice on Pistakee Bay near Johnsburg, McHenry Township Fire Protection District officials said.

Fire crews were called about 5 p.m. Friday to the scene. The man who fell through was ice fishing with friends.

Other people were able to get the man out of the ice and the group was heading back to shore when first responders arrived, Battalion Chief Ryan Mastandrea said.

The man was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital in good condition, but was checked out for hypothermia, Mastandrea said.

The fire protection district urges people to use extreme caution when out ice fishing.
