Police activity at Jacobs High result of ‘false lockdown’

Police activity Friday morning at Jacobs High School in Algonquin was the result of a “false lockdown.”

A spokesperson for School District 300 said the school “experienced a false lockdown, and there was no threat or danger to students.”

“This morning, at approximately 7:21 a.m., a lockdown alarm was activated at Jacobs High School. We immediately implemented our lockdown procedures and worked closely with local law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of everyone on campus,” school officials posted on the district website.

Students were “being allowed back into the building” after officials determined the alarm was false, according to the statement. Students and staff who already were in the building were “safety secured in classrooms or designated locations.”

According to the statement, when police need to “review a building during a lockdown ... anyone not yet inside must wait to enter the school to ensure the situation is safe and secure.”

“We understand this situation may have caused concern, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we prioritized safety,” according to the statement.

The Algonquin Police Department put out word Friday morning of a “heavy police presence” in the area of the school, but the department updated the posting a short time later to say all activities at the school had “resumed as safe and normal.”
