Multiple school districts across the McHenry County area announced late Monday that classes have been canceled for Tuesday due to the bitter cold and below-zero windchills expected throughout the region.
The National Weather Service put much of northern Illinois under a cold weather advisory, beginning at 9 p.m. Monday night through noon. Lows are expected to fall at 8 below, with windchills forecast to reach 25 to 30 below zero.
At those temperatures, frostbite can set in to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, according to the weather service.
School districts that have closed for the day:
- Nippersink District 2
- McHenry District 15.
- McHenry High School District 156, both campuses.
- Johnsburg District 12.
- St. John the Baptist Catholic School, Johnsburg
- Alden-Hebron District 19
- Harrison District 36.
- Prairie Grove District 46.
- Crystal Lake District 47.
- Harvard District 50.
- Richmond-Burton District 157.
- Woodstock District 200.
- Crystal Lake Community High School District 155 – e-learning day
- Marian Central Catholic, Woodstock – asynchronous learning day.
