Man pleads guilty to sex assault of child in McHenry County, gets 14 years in prison

A man has been sentenced in McHenry County court to 14 years in prison in a plea deal after he was charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse and assault of a 14-year-old child.

Zackery D. Olson, 35, entered a guilty plea Thursday before Judge Mark Gerhardt to one count of sexual assault of a family member under the age of 18. He will also have to register as a sex offender for life, authorities said.

In exchange for the plea, seven counts of aggravated sexual abuse and seven counts sexual assault were dropped.

According to the indictment, the alleged sexual abuse and assault happened multiple times from September 2019 to February 2023. One count alleged Olson “pushed [the girl] up against the wall and kissed her” when the victim was under 13 years old, the court records show.

Olson was originally charged with three counts of criminal sexual assault and four counts of aggravated sexual abuse, according to the complaint. The complaint alleged Olson committed an “act of sexual penetration” with a family member under the age of 18 and held a “position of trust, authority or supervision” over the victim.

A Crystal Lake address for Olson was previously listed in court records, which indicate he more recently has been living in Lindenhurst. Court documents show Olson was arrested by former McHenry County Sheriff deputy Christopher Marvel, who was charged earlier this year with misconduct, soliciting sexual acts and defrauding a drug and alcohol test. His case is pending.

Truth-in-sentencing requires Olson to serve a minimum of 85 percent of his sentence authorities said. After he’s completed his prison sentence, Olson will be subject to a supervised release for a period ranging from three years to life, according to a McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office news release.

According to court records, a warrant for Olson’s arrest was issued February 2023 with a bail set at $310,000, before the SAFE-T Act did away with cash bail in Illinois. He has been held in county jail since March 2023.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Ashley Romito. The Crystal Lake Police Department, McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and Child Advocacy Center of McHenry County assisted in the investigation, according to the release.
