The McHenry County Coroner’s Office identified the man who was killed in a Spring Grove-area crash last week.
In a news release sent Friday afternoon, Coroner Michael Rein said Michael De Brock, 61, of Spring Grove was killed in the crash near the intersection of Main Street and Villa Vista on Jan. 24.
Rein said De Brock was taken to the Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy performed Monday had preliminary findings showing the cause of death was blunt-force trauma, Rein said.
The coroner’s office continues to work collaboratively with Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, the Spring Grove Fire Protection District, the McHenry Township Fire Protection District and Spring Grove police, Rein said.
The sheriff’s office said Monday that a preliminary investigation indicated a Volvo was heading east on Main Street and, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line as it approached a curve in the road and collided with a westbound Cadillac Escalade. De Brock, who was driving the Volvo, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, authorities said.
The sheriff’s office said the front left tire of each vehicle “struck in an offset, head-on crash.” The Volvo came to rest on the south shoulder area, while the Cadillac ended up in a ditch, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. The driver and passenger in the Cadillac were taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the sheriff’s office.
