Construction workers who noticed a fire had broken out in an attached garage in Huntley on Saturday afternoon helped put out the blaze while firefighters were in route, helping prevent the fire from spreading into the home, officials report.
The Huntley Fire Protection District responded to a call at 12:03 p.m. Saturday to the 12100 block of Ehorn Road for a reported garage fire. Firefighters arrived within six minutes to “smoke and fire showing from a single-story residential garage,” Battalion Chief Brian Harders said in a news release.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it spread into the home. Most of the damage was contained to the garage, with “minor smoke damage” to the home, which remains habitable, according to the release.
The homeowner was in the home at the time of the fire but unaware, according to the release. Construction workers noticed the fire and tried to put it out using buckets of water before firefighters arrived.
“Between their quick actions and the rapid response from firefighters, the house and its contents were saved,” Harders said in the release.
No injuries were reported, and crews remained at the scene for about two hours to complete preliminary investigations. The fire continues to be under investigation by the Huntley Fire Protection District, according to the release.
